Features
HIPS currently has two feature films in development:
Deep Water and My Persona.
Deep Water:
This is the tale of a love triangle set in an isolated fishing village on the rugged west coast of Tasmania. Where betrayal forces three people to accept the truth or risk losing everything
John is a fisherman living on the Wild West coast of Tasmania with his Filipino wife Lita. Following the unexpected arrival of Murray, a young Aboriginal man, John's world begins to disintegrate. He becomes tormented by his fruitless attempts to get Lita pregnant and his inabilty to catch enough fish to pay off the mortgage on his boat. When things finally begin to turn around for him he is confronted with a terrible choice. Either he accepts the truth about the past, or he loses all hope for the future.
Deep Water was written by Michael Cummins.
My Persona:
This is a light-hearted comedy of errors and mistaken identity. Helen attempts to revitalise her marriage by masquerading as Monique (a beautician junkie with a French accent), not realising that the character she has created is disturbingly similar to the woman who has run off with all of Dominic Depardieu's money.
With Helen's husband falling in love with the pseudo Monique and his business partner meeting the real one, Helen is drawn into a dangerous game of cat and mouse
When the real Monique mysteriously disappears, Helen becomes the prime suspect, and must resurrect Monique, prove her innocence, and save her marriage.
My Persona was written by Peter Jessop.
Documentaries
Ice Maverick and Reputation and Livelihood.
Ice Maverick:
Sir Hubert Wilkins spent most of his life as a scientist and adventurer exploring the polar regions. The driving force in his life was his vision "to bring mankind to a higher state of civilisation". He believed that the long-term prediction of global weather patterns would enable more efficient food supply and allow agricultural industries to eliminate scarcity and thus bring harmony to the world.
Born in South Australia in 1888 Sir Hubert became the first man to fly over the Artic Sea and take a submarine below the Arctic ice. An Indiana Jones type character, Hubert Wilkins was an official war photographer in WW1 and then a documentary cinematographer. Despite becoming entangled in espionage and the politics of the race for glory and discovery, Sir Hubert was known as a courageous explorer and scientist, receiving a knighthood in Britain, honours in Europe and celebrity in the US.
Ice Maverick details the life of this extraordinary man now forgotten by history, and his quest to alleviate human suffering. It uses his extraordinary archival footage to recreate the adventure, drama and excitement of Sir Hubert Wilkins' life and times.
Reputation and Livelihood:
This is a documentary filmed at the 2002 Melbourne Art Fair featuring interviews with artists at all stages of their careers, exploring how they work, survive and build their careers.
